Tier-on-tier shutters split the window into two independent shutter sections — top and bottom operate completely separately, including opening and closing the panels themselves (not just the louvers). The most flexible plantation shutter configuration and the most expensive. The right call when you want maximum control over privacy and daylight on the same window.
Signs You Need Tier-on-Tier Shutters
You want plantation shutters with the option to open the bottom for full window access while the top stays closed, or vice versa. Your front-facing window has a sightline issue at the bottom but you want to be able to see out clearly at the top. You're working on a tall window where one panel per window doesn't make sense. You have multiple privacy needs on the same window — open at the top for daylight, closed at the bottom for privacy, but flexibility to switch.
Tier-on-tier costs about 30–40% more than full height because it's essentially two complete shutter installations on one window. The flexibility is worth it for the right space.
Our Tier-on-Tier Shutters Options
Within tier-on-tier we offer all the standard material and louver choices — real wood, faux wood, composite; 2.5-inch through 4.5-inch louvers. The top and bottom sections can be matched (same material, same color) or contrasted (different finishes) for a designed look. The horizontal split is typically at the window's mid-point but can be adjusted based on architectural features.
Each section has its own hinges and operates independently. Both sections have full tilt-louver control. Hidden or visible tilt rods on each.
Tier-on-Tier Shutters for Pittsburgh Homes & Businesses
Tier-on-tier shutters fit Pittsburgh's tall traditional windows — Victorian-era homes in Friendship, Highland Park, Lawrenceville, and parts of Squirrel Hill where windows are 7+ feet tall. They also work in formal rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows in Sewickley Heights and Fox Chapel new construction.
We install across Pittsburgh, Moon Township, Coraopolis, Sewickley, Robinson, Carnegie, Bridgeville, Mt. Lebanon, Upper St. Clair, Bethel Park, Cranberry Township, Wexford, McCandless, Fox Chapel, and surrounding western Pennsylvania communities.
What to Expect
Call (412) 634-5526 or book online. Free in-home consultation. Tier-on-tier requires especially careful measurement because the horizontal split between sections is permanent and visible. We measure, talk split height and finish coordination, and quote a fixed price. Production runs 7–9 weeks. Install is one visit, 3–5 hours per window.
